IPTV on Kodi UK: Setup Guide for PVR IPTV Simple Client
Kodi can be a capable IPTV front end. Here is how to configure PVR IPTV Simple Client properly, and what to do when it will not load.

Direct answer: install the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on in Kodi, paste your M3U playlist URL and XMLTV guide URL into its settings, enable the add-on, then restart Kodi. Live channels appear under TV in the main menu.
Kodi is a capable IPTV front end once configured, and it is popular because it runs on almost anything. It is less forgiving than a purpose-built player, so the setup steps matter more.
What Kodi is, and what it is not
Kodi is an open-source media player. It ships with no content at all, and it has no channels of its own. Everything it plays comes from a source you configure.
For IPTV, that means an M3U playlist URL from your provider, plus an XMLTV guide URL if you want a programme guide. The add-on that handles both is called PVR IPTV Simple Client, and it is available from Kodi's official repository.
One important limitation: Kodi's IPTV add-on works with M3U and XMLTV URLs. It does not accept Xtream Codes credentials directly. If your provider only supplied a server address, username and password, ask them for the M3U and EPG URLs instead. Our Smarters setup guide explains both login types.
Before you begin
- Kodi installed on your device, from the official source
- Your M3U playlist URL
- Your XMLTV guide URL, if your provider supplies one
- A device with reasonable memory — Kodi is heavier than a dedicated IPTV player
Step 1: Enable the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on
- Open Kodi and go to Settings, then Add-ons.
- Select Install from repository, then Kodi Add-on repository.
- Open PVR clients.
- Select PVR IPTV Simple Client and choose Install.
- When it finishes, select Configure.
Step 2: Add your M3U playlist
In the configuration screen:
- Open the General tab.
- Set M3U Play List URL to your full playlist link. It usually ends in
.m3uor.m3u8. - Leave Cache M3U at local storage enabled unless you have a reason to disable it — it speeds up loading after the first run.
- Do not close the window yet.
Check the URL carefully. The most common Kodi IPTV failure is a truncated playlist link, usually because it was copied from a messaging app. Compare the start and end of the URL with what your provider sent.
Step 3: Add your programme guide
- Switch to the EPG settings tab.
- Set EPG URL to your XMLTV link.
- Leave Cache EPG at local storage enabled.
- Set the update interval to 12 or 24 hours.
- Select OK to save.
If the guide does not populate, our EPG troubleshooting guide covers the causes, and IPTV EPG explained covers how guide data works.
Step 4: Enable the add-on and restart
This step is the one most people miss.
- Go to Settings, then PVR & Live TV.
- Select Enable PVR or Enable TV.
- If Kodi prompts that a PVR client is disabled, choose to enable it.
- Restart Kodi completely — not just back to the home screen.
After the restart, a TV section appears in the main menu, containing your channels and guide.
Step 5: Tidy the channel list
Kodi organises channels into groups based on what the playlist provides.
- Use Channel manager under PVR settings to hide groups you never watch
- Mark favourites so your regular channels sit at the top
- If loading is slow, hide the largest unused groups — Kodi struggles with very large channel counts on low-memory devices
Common Kodi IPTV problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No TV section in the menu | PVR not enabled | Settings, PVR & Live TV, enable PVR, restart Kodi |
| Channels missing entirely | Playlist URL incomplete | Re-paste the full M3U URL |
| Channels load, guide empty | EPG URL missing or wrong | Add or correct the XMLTV URL |
| Kodi freezes on startup | Playlist too large for the device | Disable caching, or use a lighter player |
| Some channels will not play | Codec not supported | Check decoding settings — see our buffering guide |
| Everything stops working | Stream addresses rotated | Ask your provider for the current URLs |
Performance tips
- Kodi is heavier than a dedicated IPTV player. On a Fire TV Stick, a purpose-built player will feel faster — see our Fire TV guide.
- Enable playlist caching so Kodi does not re-download the list on every launch.
- Keep Kodi updated, since PVR behaviour changes between versions.
- Avoid installing many add-ons. Each one adds startup overhead.
- Consider a device with more memory if you plan to use Kodi daily — see our IPTV box guide.
Is Kodi the right choice for you?
| You want | Better option |
|---|---|
| The simplest possible setup | A purpose-built player such as Smarters |
| The best programme guide | TiviMate on Android TV |
| One app for local media and IPTV | Kodi |
| The fastest experience on a stick | A dedicated player |
The bottom line
Kodi works well for IPTV provided you use M3U and XMLTV URLs, enable the PVR client, and restart Kodi after configuring it. If your provider only gave you Xtream Codes credentials, ask for the playlist URL, or use a player that supports them natively.
