IPTV EPG Explained: What Is an Electronic Programme Guide?
The EPG is the on-screen TV guide in your player app. Here is how it works and how to fix it when listings do not appear.
If you have ever pressed the Guide button on a Freeview remote, you already know what an EPG is. EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide — the grid showing what is on now, what is next and what is coming up later.
How an IPTV EPG works
With traditional broadcast TV, guide data is sent alongside the channels. With IPTV, the guide is usually a separate data file — commonly in a format called XMLTV — that your player app downloads and matches to each channel.
Matching channels to listings
Each channel in your list carries an ID. The app looks for the same ID in the guide file and lines up the listings. When the IDs match, you see programme names and times. When they do not, you see "No information".

- Reminders, in players that support them
- Catch-up links, where a service offers catch-up
Why EPG data sometimes goes missing
- The guide has not finished loading. Large guides can take a minute or two after you first sign in.
- The data is out of date. Most apps refresh the guide automatically, but some need a manual update.
- Your time zone is wrong. Listings may appear an hour out — check your device is set to UK time, particularly after the clocks change.
- A channel has no guide data. Not every channel carries listings.
How to refresh your guide
In most player apps, open Settings → EPG (or similar) and choose Update or Refresh. Restarting the app afterwards often helps. If your app lets you choose how many days of guide data to store, a shorter window loads faster on older devices.
